They say black don’t crack, but the truth is that there’s a lot of skin care needed to keep your skin looking radiant over the years. Taking care of your skin should absolutely be a priority especially as you get older. The sooner you get started on this, the better. There are way too many products out there and that can get a little overwhelming. Sure, you can go the extra mile in your skin care routine, but if you just want something simple that you can follow, here is a basic routine to get you started.

  1. Cleanse

Our skin collects dirt, oil, sweat among other things all day and so cleansing both in the morning and evening will keep your face fresh. Make sure you do a skin test so you can buy the right cleanser for your skin type. Also make sure to avoid using harsh soaps and scrubs on your face. You can use a cotton ball or clean fingers to apply the cleanser.

  1. Tone

Toner is used immediately after a cleanser and removes any additional impurities on your face and helps minimize the appearance of pores. Use a toner with PH balancing and avoid those with alcohol or citrus as they dry out your skin. Use a cotton pad to apply your toner.

  1. Moisturize

Moisturizing locks in moisture and keeps your skin hydrated. Get one that is ideal for your skin type and avoid using anything with alcohol on your face. Nowadays, there are so many options with natural ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter that are great for most skin types.

  1. Exfoliate

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and helps with blackheads. It is advisable to exfoliate once to twice a week, depending on your skin type. You can buy an exfoliator or you can opt to make one at home using ingredients like sugar. Experiment and see what gives you the best results.

  1. Use sunscreen

There’s a false belief that black women do not need to use sunscreen. Our skin gets damaged too and skin cancer is a reality. Either use a moisturizer with SPF or apply sunscreen after your moisturizer every day.

Be sure to stick to your routine especially if you wear makeup and watch your skin prosper!
