Moving house can be quite exhausting especially if you’re juggling between school or work and house hunting. Still, it can be very exciting to move into a new house especially if it’s your first house. There are some things that are obvious when it comes to house hunting such as budget, water, security and ease of access that we don’t need to talk about. There are however, some things you should consider when picking a house that you may forget and are just as important.

  1. Drainage

You need to make sure that the house does not flood during the rainy season or become unbearably dusty during dry weather. You don’t want to be wading to your apartment when it rains or have all furniture covered in dust during hotter months.

  1. Network

Take out your phone and walk around the apartment and check that you can make and receive calls and surf the net. You don’t want to end up in a house where you have to go stand in the corner of your living room to make a call or check your Instagram.

  1. Light and ventilation

Just for your health, don’t live in a really dark apartment. Check that there’s enough light at least so you can know what time of day it is and there are adequate windows for you to ventilate the house.

  1. Noise pollution

Make sure you check where the nearest clubs, churches and mosques are. You don’t want to spend your nights tossing and turning because of the noise. Also, make sure to ask your landlord/caretaker about the noise policy in the building so as not to be surprised that your neighbours are up playing loud music at 3am on a Tuesday and this is normal.

  1. Plumbing

Other than finding out about the water situation, open the taps to make sure that indeed there is water and that it is clean and flush the toilets to make sure they are in working order. You may open the tap and be met with brown water or very low-pressure water so make sure you check. Also, check that all the power sockets work and that the cupboards and wardrobes are fitted in.

Happy house hunting!
