New Year, New You right? It’s easier said than done and a lot of this has to do with some negative habits we cling to. Here are some habits you need to ditch in the new year.

  1. Overworking

“I’ll sleep when I’m dead” has become a popular saying and it speaks to a culture of always been on. The idea is that the hustle never stops and that it’s necessary to be constantly on the grind. Hard work is important if you are trying to succeed and our jobs are becoming increasingly demanding. This however, is not a healthy way to live. There are too many stories of young people dying from exhaustion and with many of us facing deteriorating mental health, it’s about time we admitted that the body and mind can only do so much and resting is not a luxury, but a necessity. So get enough sleep, schedule a relaxing activity and try as much as possible to leave work at the office.

  1. Constantly Being Online

Yes, we live in the digital age and you have to know what is going on on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. You want to post your highlights when you go out to lunch or head out with your friends. There’s no problem with staying connected. It just becomes a problem when you are unable to disconnect. Unless you are making money online or it’s literally part of your job description, limit the amount of time you spend on there. Sometimes, it’s better to be in the moment where you are, doing what you are doing.

  1. Making Huge New Year Resolutions

It’s tempting to write or declare a bunch of new year resolutions that will turn your life around. New year resolutions hardly work because they are too many and too much to do in such a short amount of time. The best thing to do is to instead focus on a few goals and map out how you’re going to achieve them in incremental steps across the year.

  1. Neglecting your health

If you’re in your 20s or early 30s, it’s tempting to think that your skin or body will always bounce back even after ill treatment that includes binge drinking, smoking, unhealthy eating habits and sleep routine. The sooner you take you health seriously, the better. Ditch all the unhealthy habits and replace them with ones that will boost your well-being. Small steps like saying goodbye to soda and reducing and limiting drinking to weekends are a good step. If you can’t join the gym, no problem. Take the stairs, walk short distances, go swimming or hiking and join a dance class.

  1. Entertaining toxic people

The people around us affect our lives in profound ways. If you have a choice, make sure the people you keep around you are good for you. This doesn’t mean that you need to have yes men around you, but you can’t have people that are constantly talking you down, dismissing your dreams and laughing at your pain and hope to thrive in life. It can be difficult to cut people off especially when you love them, but you must do what’s best for you.
