Black Panther

Never has the premiere of a movie been this much anticipated. The social media world is abuzz with all things Black Panther: starting from the all-black cast, to the plot, black culture and pride, and even people competing on the most appropriate/ ‘African’ outfit to wear to the premiere!

All this is understandable, first of all because the beloved wondergirl Lupita Nyong’o stars in it. The acclaimed Hollywood actress plays Nakia, who fights beside the hero Black Panther (T’Challa). Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa returns to his technologically-advanced and reclusive home country- Wakanda- to take his place as king. However, it’s not all roses and sunshine. An old rival re-emerges on the scene and T’Challa’s fortitude as king is put to the test. He’s drawn into a feud that puts the fate of Wakanda and the whole world at risk.

Lupita’s adoring fans in her hometown of Kisumu are going all-out as they prepare to receive her during the Kenya premiere of the movie. She broke the news of her trip to Kenya on her Facebook page. “Yesterday I graced ‘Black Panther’ premiere in Los Angeles. Kisumu has been chosen to host the same event on February 13, 2018. Come all and share some light moments,” the message read. Her father Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o (who is also the governor of Kisumu) is expected to join her.

The tantalizing trailers online feature powerful images and soundtracks that serve to build the appetite of movie buffs. Black Panther is based on the Marvel comic character that first appeared in Fantastic Four Vol 1. issue 52, in 1966. Marvel Studios have been hailed for their audacious move to have a black superhero. Their Phase 3 commitment is to create new heroes and continue the adventures favoured by fans over the course of 4 years and 9 films.
