Cape Town is a popular destination for visitors to South Africa- and for good reasons. From breathtaking landscapes, rich history, amazing biodiversity and mix of cultures, the ‘Mother Town’ as it is fondly called has so much to offer. If planning to swing by down south soon, here are some of the exciting activities and locations waiting for you.
Table Mountain
As one of the top attractions in Cape Town, it would be a loss if you didn’t visit. The views from the summit are absolutely breathtaking. There are two ways of getting there. One is by cable car, perfect if you’re running short of time or just want to relax. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the two-hour hike up. Either way, the experience will leave you with positive lasting memories. The cable car swings a bit as it goes up but not to worry, it is well secured and the staff are excellent at putting visitors at ease. Look out for the Dassie- the only mammal that can look directly at the sun without damaging its eyes.
Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
This location competes fiercely with Cable Mountain for position of the most visited place in Cape Town. It has beautiful scenery for holiday photos. Numerous shops selling everything from food, to clothes and even high-end jewellery make sure you have everything you need. The art scene is vibrant here, with street performers putting on impressive shows. At the water’s edge flocks of friendly seagulls wait for tourists to throw them crumbs. Try out the giant ferris wheel for stunning views of the surrounding.
Robben Island & The Robben Island Museum
The late former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island for 27 years. Many other political prisoners were held here as well because of their fight for independence. With such a rich history, you can’t afford to skip a visit to the island. Actually tickets sell like hot pastry. You need to book online two weeks in advance. Tours are done 3 times a day and each takes about three and a half hours. Sometimes a tour is cancelled if the sea is too rough, so cross your fingers. A full refund is issued if the tour is cancelled and can’t be pushed to the next time.
The Robben Island Museum is at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. The history of the island and its prisoners is on display in text, images and short films. Something for everyone.
Tips
The easiest way to get around Cape Town as a tourist is by the City Sightseeing Shuttles. You pay a fee that covers your ride(s) for the day. You may get off at designated stops, check out the scene then wait for the bus to come around again. Hop on and continue with the journey till you get to the next stop. You can get on and off as many times but once you give out your ticket to the operator, your ride is done. These double-decker buses provide great views if you sit at the top.
Cape Town locals are very friendly. If you happen to get lost just ask around for directions. If feeling wary approach staff in shops and you’ll be sorted in no time.
