Our hair is our crown. We feel unstoppable when it’s popping. We can even take on an army. Well, maybe not that invincible but healthy, properly coiffed hair is a major confidence booster. One of the most common hindrances to healthy hair is breakage. This is when the strands snap off. You may wonder why your hair isn’t growing longer yet you’re taking such good care of it. Breakage is the culprit.
Dryness
When your hair is dry, it breaks off. To combat this, keep it moisturized. Washing the strands isn’t enough. More nutrients are needed to keep it hydrated. A DIY deep conditioner of essential oils, carrier oils and a humectant such as honey or glycerine will suffice. Alternatively, you can use a ready-made one from the store. Use an oil to seal in the moisture. Oil creates a barrier that prevents water from escaping. A satin scarf or bonnet prevents your pillow from absorbing moisture from your hair at night.
Styling
Tight styles that pull excessively on the strands cause breakage. Contrary to long-held beliefs, neat hairstyles can be achieved without all that pulling and pain. Find a hairstylist who understands this concept. When styling your own hair, watch out for the amount of force you use when doing twists, ponytail styles and buns. Be gentle when combing. brushing and putting the hair into hairbands.
Exposed Hair
If you are prone to pulling your hair while in deep thought or stressed, consider using headwraps. You may find yourself absentmindedly twirling the strands around your fingers- especially hair at the nape. Wraps keep your hair away from yourself and harmful stuff in the environment like dust, exhaust fumes and harsh sun. A win-win solution.
Low Protein
Protein is a major component of hair thus low levels lead to hair breakage since the strands are weak. This nutrient repairs damaged spots in the hair shaft. Topical application through commercially made protein treatments or DIY (avocado, mayonnaise, eggs, etc) help to remedy this. Note though that too much protein makes hair stiff.
Illness
Diseases such as Lupus are responsible for breakage. The hair becomes brittle and falls out in patches. Be sure to consult a doctor in such cases.
