A Wrinkle In Time is a fantasy/ science fiction film directed by Ava DuVernay, based on Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel by the same name. It tells the story of Meg Murry, a young girl who discovers that her scientist father (Dr. Murry) is being held captive on a distant planet. He had disappeared five years ago while on a space mission to the planet, which the kids later discover is the epitome of all evil in the universe.
Meg enlists the help of her genius brother Wallace, fellow student O’Keefe, and astral travellers Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which to find her dad. The Mrs Ws are celestial beings who use their magical powers to guide the children on their quest.
Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Claing, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Storm Reid and Chris Pine star in the fantasy adventure film. At $103 million, A Wrinkle In Time makes Ava DuVernay the first black woman to direct a live action film with a budget of over $100 million. We can’t get enough of this black excellence!
With stunning visuals, enthralling music and engaging plot, the film aimed at a tween audience is set to be a hit. Young girls will find Meg relatable: a smart teen yet struggling with issues typical of that age- being resentful, stubborn, wrestling with self-pity and finding herself involved in fistfights and shouting. She feels like a disappointment to her mum. O’Keefe comes from a home where life is rough and though he is popular at school, he considers himself an outcast.
A Wrinkle In Time opened in theatres on March 9, 2018.
