cellphone

The technology age in which we live makes it near impossible to stay without a cellphone. We use them for setting reminders, as distractions when in public places, to listen to music, to work, catch up with friends through social media…the list goes on and on. We spend so much time on these gadgets even without realising. This can negatively affect one’s health over time.

Posture

Most of the time we find ourselves hunched over our phones. The neck is bent forward at an angle that’s unhealthy to be in for long hours. As the forward angle increases, strain on the neck also increases. Over time, your neck, upper spine and back experience excess wear and tear. Spinal degeneration may occur- this require surgery to reverse. Instead of looking down at your phone, raise it to eye level.

Sleep

Phone screens emit blue light which interfere with the body’s natural sleep rhythm. It affects production of the sleep hormone melatonin, keeping the body alert. Light emitted from the screen gives a signal to the brain that it’s still daytime, making it harder for you to fall asleep. It’s recommended to stop cellphone usage at least an hour before bed to allow the natural sleep- wake cycle to kick in.

Depression

Social media is great for catching up but can affect your mental health negatively. Scrolling down your cellphone, seeing everyone and their grandma having a blast on vacation or buying cool outfits can trigger depression. You develop a ‘fear of missing out’ (FOMO). You dedicate a lot of time and resources to catch up with them. No one wants a boring life, right? If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed by sadness because of comparing yourself to others, consider taking a social media break. Immerse yourself in something you love, preferably away from screens. Hiking, baking, DIY home crafts, volunteering at an elderly people’s shelter will erase any traces of FOMO.
