facial mask

We all know that it’s important to pamper our skin often. But we might not always have time or enthusiasm to go to the spa or salon for facial treatments. That’s where DIY home solutions come in. You don’t even need so many products but if feeling extravagant, you can go all out.

Cleansing
Use a mild cleanser to remove make up (if any) and grime from your face. In the absence of a dedicated cleanser you can use African Black Soap or activated charcoal soap.

Exfoliating
This process removes dead skin cells from the surface, leaving you with soft, glowing skin. Rub the exfoliating product gently in upward circular motions for two minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Steaming
This opens your pores in readiness to receive nutrients. An electric steamer is ideal for this process but if you don’t have one, fill a basin with hot water. Dip a washcloth in the water then wring it. Cover your face for a few seconds then repeat. To enrich this step, add a few drops of essential oils and some herbs. Lavender oil, rosemary oil, lemon oil and rosemary sprigs are just a few of the many options you can try.

Mask
The kind of mask you use depends on your skin type, for example clay masks are ideal for oily skin. Leave it on for the recommended time then rinse off.

Toning
This step firms the skin and reduces wrinkles. Begin by rinsing your face with cold water to close the pores. This is important for sealing in moisture and nutrients. Follow with your toner of choice such as rose water or apple cider vinegar.

Moisturize
Using your favourite moisturizer whether an oil or cream.
It is recommended that exfoliation be done once a week. Doing it too often can irritate the skin.

A home facial is so easy to do and the best part is you can use ingredients right from the kitchen. Your skin is left silky smooth and your mind relaxed.
