You’ve already planned that road trip and are raring to go. If you’ve decided on camping then prepare yourself for the full nature experience. It could get a little unnerving for someone who’s not used to it. Going from four walls to a tent is a big difference. But with some tricks the transition gets easier, allowing you to enjoy a relaxing time in the wild.
Practice pitching your tent beforehand. This saves you time and energy when you arrive at the campsite. Fighting with tents ruins the mood yet the trip is just getting started. When choosing a campsite, look for areas that are naturally flat and soft. Clear any stones and twigs from the ground before pitching the tent.
Do your best to arrive early at the campsite to enable you choose the best location for the tents. Consider the slope- you don’t want rain flooding into your tent. Position the tent door away from prevailing winds and other people’s houses if any.
If your camping destination is cold, dress in or carry several layers of clothing. This is the easiest way to control your body temperature instead of wearing bulky pieces. It also allows you to offload some layers and remain light in case the weather warms up.
Plan some fun activities such as hiking and biking to fully immerse yourself in nature. Make sure you have an experienced guide and GPS equipment for navigation. These activities are not only enjoyable but also give you a good workout. Trivia and storytelling sessions around the bonfire at night keeps things interesting. You could also roast meat and bond as you share the meal. For the brave, night walking helps to train your low-light vision. It’s amazing how much you can see at night without external light sources.
Keep your food out of reach when not in use. Uninvited animal guests will join you at night for their share. Garbage should be firmly locked away until it’s time to leave the campsite. Dispose it in allocated bins outside the park.
