feet

Our feet do so much work, yet we tend to neglect them since they’re ‘out of reach’ compared to, say, the hands. We may assume that washing them while taking a shower is enough. But they actually need a lot of love. Here’s how to keep those feet looking and feeling healthy.

Shoes

Always ensure the shoes you wear are comfortable. If they’re too tight you could develop corns or bunions. High heels make one look sultry, but wearing them too often results in knee, back and ankle strain. It could even deform your spine.

Our feet sweat a lot even when we don’t realise it. Choose shoes whose inner lining is natural, breathable material such as leather and cotton. Alternate the pairs you wear to give each enough time to dry before the next wear.

Wash Properly

It’s not enough to let the soapy water from the rest of the body rinse your feet. Take time and wash them thoroughly. Focus on the spaces between the toes- these are prone to bacteria and fungi since they are not exposed. Use a pumice stone regularly to remove excess dead skin from the soles.

When you have time to spare, soak your feet in warm water for a few minutes before scrubbing. Give them a gentle massage to soothe them. After washing make sure you dry well, focusing on in between the toes. Follow with a powder to keep them dry.

Exercise

Leg and foot muscles need to be worked out too. Walking is the best way to do this. A short walk every day is enough to keep those muscles firm. If you experience soreness when walking, try using arch supports to support your weight while walking. They also keep your feet in the right position.

Moisturise

To keep the skin on your feet soft, moisturise after washing. Apply a lotion of choice every day. For best results use one that contains a natural emolient, such as cocoa butter. At night wear a pair of cotton socks after moisturising. This keeps the lotion on your feet and away from your sheets.
