keep warm stylish

When cold weather checks in, a good number of people focus on beating the chill. They throw on whatever they can find in the closet to keep warm. Fashion consciousness is thrown out the window. They may not be aware that keeping warm and being stylish aren’t mutually exclusive. If this describes you, don’t worry- we have some useful pointers.

Layering

This is one of the simplest yet most important secrets to keeping warm. Rather than looking for the bulkiest jacket, wear several tops then throw on a jacket. You can have a spaghetti top as the first layer, followed by a vest, blouse then a coat to top it off. This setup allows you to offload some tops in case the weather warms up.

Heat Loss Points

We lose the most heat from the head, neck, fingers, face and toes. Remember how as kids we’d be scolded for not wearing socks and gloves? Invest in a good quality scarf to keep your neck warm. Beanies and other kinds of hats with ear muffs are a saviour- they also protect your hair. Waterproof boots coupled with thick socks keep the toes toasty. Specially made insulated boots are ideal for extremely cold weather. Mittens are available in all kinds of colours and designs to suit any taste.

Fabric

The type of fabric you wear determines how warm you feel through the day. Go for wool, fleece, corduroy and faux fur, which trap air that acts as insulation against heat loss. Faux fur also looks quite stylish so it’s a double win. Watch out when wearing cotton though. When it gets wet you’ll freeze out.

Layer on the Legs

Apart from the torso, your legs should ideally be dressed in layers too. Wear long underwear as a base then your trousers on top.

Belt Up

To avoid looking like a huge waddling mass, cinch your waist area with a stylish belt. A statement belt goes well with a solid coloured coat while a plain belt pairs well with bold prints.
