nanny baby

Having a nanny is something parents in this day and age can’t avoid. In the past, life was more communal especially in African societies. There was always a relative around who could help a mom take care of her young child(ren). But life has changed. Everybody is busy and we don’t live near our extended families. Hiring nannies takes the pressure off particularly when it’s time for the mom to go back to work.

Since a nanny spends a lot of time with your child, it’s imperative to foster a good relationship with her. Being on good terms motivates her to take the best care of your child and home. So how do you do this?

Hiring

Before you hire a nanny, find out as much as you can about her. Carry out your own background checks. If using a hiring agency, make sure they do criminal and reference checks. Maybe a friend is referring someone they know to you- gather all the information you can about her. This is somebody you’re entrusting your child and home to, after all.

A potential nanny should have a natural affinity for children. Watch out for one who seems to be forcing a love for children- they can only pretend for so long anyway.

Be clear from the beginning what her job description covers- whether it’s taking care of the baby only or it includes keeping house. This way, they can gauge from the onset if they really want the job.

Expectations

Unmet expectations breed frustration. But how can the nanny meet your expectations if she doesn’t know what they are? Clearly outline what you want done, how and why you want it done. You could even prepare a list of main categories of work and the constituent tasks. In case of a disagreement, the document will help to keep the discussion focused.

Friendliness

As much as the nanny is your employee, you still need to treat her well. Take interest in her well-being. Pay her on time and don’t overwork her. When she sees that yo value her, she will give her best without coercion- and may even exceed your expectations.
