Bread is one of the most popular breakfast foods. It also makes an easy snack for trips. Though it’s hard to put a finger on when the first loaf was made, bread has been around from as early as 8000BC. If you’re tired of the ordinary bread from the supermarket, this recipe provides a homemade alternative.
Ingredients
250g wholemeal flour
1 cup warm water
7g yeast
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp honey
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Makes 1 small loaf
Method
Mix the flour, salt and yeast in a bowl.
Add the warm water and stir thoroughly.
Add the vegetable oil and honey then knead for 10 minutes on a floured surface.
Place the dough in an oiled bread tin, cover with a dry cloth and let it sit for an hour.
Pre-heat the oven to 180°C for some minutes.
Put the dough in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes.
Remove carefully, apply some margarine/ butter on the top side while still hot (optional).
Allow to cool then serve with tea other preferred beverage.
Tips
The longer you knead the dough, the more airy the loaf will be.
To tell if the loaf is completely baked, tap the top with a spoon or fork. A well baked loaf sound hollow when tapped.
Don’t open the oven before the loaf is done- you’ll end up with soggy bread.
