Prints are an easy way to jazz up your outfits. Incorporate them into your ‘do when you need a break from solid colours. Be careful when going for prints to avoid ending up looking like a clown, unless that’s your intention of course.
Keep It simple
Avoid wearing prints top-to-toe. For example, pair a print top with a solid colour skirt or pants. This tones down the outfit and makes it easy on the eye. If wearing a print jumpsuit or dress, keep the accessories and shoes in solid colours. Their colour should match one from the print.
Print Size
Small floral prints give the illusion of a reduced surface area. This works well if you’re plus-sized. Floral patterns that are the size of your hand span and below are the ideal size. Go for large prints if you have a small frame- just make sure the size doesn’t overwhelm/ drown your figure.
Choose Fitting Pieces
An oversized outfit with large prints can leave you looking like a balloon. Go for a tight fit instead. Alternatively, use a slim belt to hold the look together and flatter your figure.
Animal Prints
These go well with black. Other colours give a garish appearance. Stick to one animal print at a time. Leopard print mixed with giraffe pattern makes your outfit confused. If unsure how to go about it, start small. Buy printed accessories like clutch bags then build up from there.
Stripes
Vertical stripes enhance a slim, tall look as opposed to horizontal ones. Wear verticals to balance out heavy areas. For instance if you’re bigger-busted, a vertical stripe blouse will tone it down.
Mixing Prints
This requires a bit more consideration. You could pair two different prints that share the same colour. This creates a theme within the outfit. Have one statement print piece (for instance a top) coupled with an accessory like a pair of shoes or a phone case also printed but toned down. Or you could wear the same print in inverted colours. Your phone case could have blue florals on a white background while the pants have white florals on a blue background. For best results choose the same hue for both pieces.
