cold season winter

During cold seasons we all rush for our heavy jackets and scarves to shield us from the chill. But many of us neglect the skin since, after all, the harsh sun is in hiding. However, the skin still needs love when it’s cold to enable it stay healthy. The elements can be brutal to the skin if you’re not careful.

Hydrate

A steaming cup of tea or coffee sounds enticing on a cold day, but having too much may actually dry out your skin. Caffeinated drinks are diuretics- they cause increased passage of urine. Thus the body loses a lot of water in this way. Have a bottle of water with you and take small sips throughout the day.

Warm Baths

In an attempt to keep warm you may lean towards really hot showers but this is detrimental to your skin. Hot water strips away sebum and moisture, leaving the skin dry. If you feel itchy after taking a bath it means the water was too hot. Use warm water instead, especially on the face. Also use gentle cleansers kind on the skin. Apply your creams/ lotions when the skin is still damp to lock in moisture.

Face Masks

After a long day of facing the elements, refresh your facial skin using a face mask. Choose on that has a cooling effect. Apply and let it sit for 10 minutes before gently rinsing it off.

Hand Cream

Sometimes we pay so much attention to the face that we forget our hands. Have a hand cream with you to moisturise the hands after washing them or doing dishes.

Cover The Skin

Apart from the lotions and creams, give your skin an extra layer of protection by covering up when you go outdoors. Use a scarf to cover your face and neck, and gloves for the hands.

Diet

Eat foods rich in Omega-3 fats- these keep the skin flexible. Some sources of Omega-3 include turkey, avocados, eggs, nuts, yogurt, cheese, cod liver oil among others. Fresh vegetables and fruits provide vitamins and minerals such as selenium and Vitamin A vital to skin health.
