Cocktails

Cocktails. Fancy events that excite and cause anxiety at the same time. They are fun and you get to meet new people, but when it comes to picking an outfit it’s a tricky affair. You don’t want to overdress or underdress. What kind of accessories should you wear? Here are a few tips to help you out.

The LBD is a classic piece for cocktails, but there are so many other options. You can still wear your little dress in other colours and look glam. Don’t fear stepping out of your comfort zone.

Pay attention to the information on the invite. What is the purpose of the event, where and when it will be held serve a greater purpose than just giving directions. Corporate cocktails need different types of outfits from wedding parties, for example. Evening events would call for more formal outfits as opposed to daytime ones. A high-end hotel venue will obviously mean you have to glam up.

Stuck on accessories? These depend on the level of detailing on your outfit. If you’re wearing a fully sequined dress, keep the pieces simple to streamline the look. A solid colour ensemble gives room to go all out with accessories. Try on different lengths, colours and textures before the event to see what works best. Keep your bag small in size- a clutch that can fit your essentials is enough.

Keep your hemlines at reasonable lengths, both the upper and lower one. Anywhere between mid-calf and mid-thigh is generally acceptable. For cocktails with a ‘club’ feel such as bachelorette parties, mini skirts work well.

If the cocktail is immediately after work, you don’t need to change into a dress. A fitting suit will do just fine. Just swap your handbag for a clutch and you’re good to go.

If totally clueless, ring up the host a few days before to clarify the theme. This eliminates errors through guesswork and gives you time to shop for an outfit in case you don’t have anything suitable for the event.
