Zanzibar

It’s no secret that East Africa has the most pristine beaches in the world. No need to look any further for that much-anticipated beach vacation. One of the destinations you must visit is Zanzibar, the breathtaking Tanzanian archipelago. It’s made of many small islands and two small ones: Unguja and Pemba.

Historical evidence suggests that Zanzibar has been inhabited by humans for at least 20,000 years. Of particular interest is Stone Town, a historic trade centre with Swahili and Islamic influences evident in the architecture. It’s located on the main island (Unguja, informally known as Zanzibar). It has been classified as a World Heritage Site.

After an afternoon exploring Stone Town, boost your energy reserves at Forodhani Food Market. It’s a night time market that opens from late afternoon. Fresh local produce is in plenty, with seafood being the most popular. Accompanied by either naan bread, samosas or fried potato balls, this is simply irresistible.

Head up North to Nungwi beach for a laid-back beach with few tourists. If you’re just looking for a tranquil beach without bothering too much about luxury hotels, Nungwi is for you.

The historic House of Wonders is the grandest building in Stone Town. It hosts an informative exhibition into the history of Zanzibar and Swahili culture.

Zanzibar is part of the spice islands due to it’s vast treasure of spices. Local guides are always at hand to help you learn about the spices as well as the history of the industry. They are available for sale along Zanzibar’s beautiful, winding streets.

For a bit of history, visit oldest building in Stone Town- The Old Fort. It was built in the 17th century to ward off attacks from the Portuguese. You can view the remains of the former fort and buy some local produce at the courtyard in the centre. The old ampitheatre is still used to host shows. The Old Fort is located right in front of Forodhani Gardens.
