Wigs are an easy option for protective styling your hair. They also provide no-fuss alternatives when you want to change up styles. They don’t eliminate hair maintenance though. Caring for your hair while under wigs goes a long way in maintaining its health.
Before putting on that wig, ensure your hair is in cornrows, braids or twists pinned down. This reduces the area exposed to friction with the wig cap. Also the ends of your hair should be tucked away. They are prone to breaking easily since they are delicate.
Look for a good wig cap. It should be one that’s smooth to avoid snagging your strands. The fit should be just right. One that’s loose will rub on the hair a lot, causing breakage. If it’s too tight the hair at the perimeter will be strained.
When securing wigs make sure that whatever is holding them in place doesn’t pull at your hair. Whether it’s clips, little combs or straps, they shouldn’t be too tight. Otherwise you’ll lose the very edges you’re trying to protect!
Listen to your hair, pay attention to when it needs hydration. When it feels dry, spritz with an oil-water mix then follow with an oil or butter to seal. Give special focus to the edges. Spritz, apply oil then massage gently to stimulate blood circulation and soothe the area. You can do this at night before bed.
No matter how cute you look in your wigs, don’t sleep in them! This will only cause friction on the strands and they’ll eventually break off.
