One of the biggest benefits of natural hair is versatility. Not only as regards styling, but also options of products to use. There are thousands of ready-made products in beauty shops that work great. You could also go the DIY route and mix products yourself and still get amazing results.
Protein Treatment
Our hair is made of protein called keratin. For the strands to remain strong, protein treatments are needed once a month. Weak hair needs even more- twice a month. A simple DIY is using mayonnaise. Section your hair and apply the mayo in a smoothing motion. Cover with a plastic cap for 15 minutes then rinse out. Alternatively, mix 2 tbsp mayo with half mashed avocado then apply. A beaten egg also works, just remember to rinse with cold water or else it will ‘cook’ on your hair.
Deep Conditioner
Mix equal parts of olive, castor, coconut and Jamaican black castor oil. Add a few drops of essential oils like rosemary and lavender for nutrients and scent. Include a humectant such as honey- these help to retain moisture within the strands. Pour all the ingredients into a bottle then apply little by little to the hair, again in smoothing motions. Cover with a plastic cap for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing out.
Anti-shedding Treatment
Shedding is a natural process for old strands of hair. However sometimes we experience excessive shedding and need remedies. A simple DIY one is tea rinses. Infuse 3 teabags of either green or black tea in hot water for 20 minutes. After rinsing out your deep conditioner, rinse the hair with the tea water. Let it stay on for 10 minutes then rinse with clear water. Do this once a week and you’ll see results in a few weeks.
Hair Colouring Mask
Henna strengthens hair, but that’s not all. Those who use it regularly report seeing a change in their hair colour. It gives a slightly brown tinge. If this tickles your fancy, apply henna once a month. Noticable change is visible after a month.
