Having oily skin can be a nightmare. You have to constantly keep checking to see if your forehead and nose are shiny. You’ve got to check what type of makeup you’re using so it doesn’t dissolve in the oil. With a few adjustments to your skin care routine, oily skin is actually manageable.

Exfoliate

Oily skin tends to have excess layer of dead skin cells and buildup. Thus they need to exfoliate more often than other skin types. Do it as often as you feel your skin needs it, but no more than 3 times a week. Too much exfoliation irritates skin. Choose an exfoliator that contains salicylic acid (BHA). This ingredient reaches deep inside the pore lining and draws out buildup.

Check The Ingredients

If you have oily skin, your aim should be to reduce oil production. Products with sulphates and certain types of alcohols dry out the skin. When it’s dry the skin produces more oil in an attempt to keep itself supple. Watch out for petrolatum and mineral oils- these trap sebum, preventing it from leaving the pores. This only causes breakouts.

Moisturise

Look for lightweight moisturisers. They should be water-based so as to reduce shine on your face. Products that contain sodium hyaluronate and glycerin are best since these ingredients keep the skin supple with water.

When applying liquid-based foundations and serums, avoid the T zone (area from the forehead down to the chin) since it produces the most oil.

Toners

Avoid using toner too often, as this could lead to sensitive skin. Once or twice a week is enough. Stay away from those with drying ingredients.

Sunscreen

While the sun might seem to help by drying the excess oil, after a while the skin becomes dry- and produces even more oil. In addition, harsh UV rays damage skin. Reach for a non-greasy or powder type sunscreen. These contain iron oxide, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that don’t clog pores but still provide sun protection.
