When we plan for a trip we usually look forward to the best. But things don’t always go as planned, do they? Unexpected negative events can throw us off course to the point of ruining the trip. With a little mitigation you could still enjoy your journey. Here are some of the problems encountered while travelling and how to handle them.
Transport Headaches
If travelling somewhere for the first time, finding reliable transport while there can be an uphill task. Some service providers overcharge customers once they realise they are foreigners. Or take them on longer routes so as to charge more. Use a ride-sharing option like Uber, which allows you to track you route.
Delayed Flight
Most times, delayed flights are due to mechanical or weather issues. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about this. Take a deep breath, try to stay positive and keep yourself busy. Make it a habit to pack something for such situations, for example your favourite book(s). Also try to always have direct flights. In case this isn’t possible, make the layover longer so that any delays don’t result in missed flights.
Lost Luggage
This is a common issue faced by those travelling by air. If this happens to you report immediately it to customer care staff, who should give you forms to fill. Some airlines offer compensation for lost luggage. In most cases, luggage is returned to passengers within a few hours or days. Thus you can rest easy and still enjoy your trip.
Accommodation Woes
Some booking agents are unscrupulous, taking advantage of unsuspecting travellers. They may overbook, cancel bookings or claim not to have records of bookings, leaving you stranded. If a hotel can’t provide the room you chose for any reason, ask for a refund. Alternatively, the agent should give you an alternative room with compensation for loss in value compared to the room you desired.
Jet Lag
Travelling to a foreign country is exciting but jet lag is such a bummer. To reduce it, begin adjusting your sleep schedule some days before the trip. Good ol’ water and moderate exercise are helpful as well.
