Janet Jackson will be feted at this year’s Billboard Music Awards. The ceremony will be held on May 20 in Las Vegas. Apart from receiving the award, the music star will perform on TV for the first time in nine years. Her last such performance was at the American Music Awards in 2009.
Billboard released this incredible news this week. Janet responded on her Instagram: “Can’t wait! Thank u @bbmas.” As evident from their press release, the annual award is pleased to honour her. An excerpt of the release: Janet Jackson is one of the most influential entertainers of the modern era. She has won six Grammy® Awards, a Golden Globe Award, earned two Emmy nominations, a nomination for an Academy Award as well as dozens of American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards. She has received accolades as an actress as well, including the NAACP Best Supporting Actor award. Jackson is a published author, dancer, businessperson, philanthropist and one of the biggest-selling artists in popular music history.
Indeed, Janet Jackson’s music career has been nothing short of stellar. She’s one of only four artists ever to have a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 in each of the last four decades, she has 19 No.1 hits on the Dance Club Songs charts, she’s earned more than 100 number 1s on Billboard’s charts and has been nominated for 18 Billboard Music Awards from 1990 (the first year the ceremony aired) to 2001, winning 10 times.
Given these achievements, it’s only right for Janet to be honoured with an ICON Award. She joins the list of previous winners including Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Celine Dion, Prince and Stevie Wonder and Neil Diamond.
