undies

After agonising to find the perfect pairs of undies, you can now relax and enjoy them. There’s not much to taking care of them, right? Just wash and hang to dry. Well, it’s not that simple. These are delicate items that come into contact with delicate parts of your body, so they need special care.

Washing/ Drying

As much as possible, handwash your undies with cold water. Hot water makes the fabric to distend. Separate dark coloured pieces from light coloured ones. When cleaning undies, use a mild detergent or a specially designed lingerie wash. Washing machine detergents are too harsh for such pieces. Those that have bleach are worse, as they’ll cause elastic to deteriorate.

For bras, drying them on a flat horizontal surface is recommended to keep them from distending. If using a washing machine, use a specially made lingerie bag/ pouch. This protects the bra from too much friction and bending the underwire. Use short cycle times on low temperature.

Hang panties outside in the sun to discourage growth of mould. Ironing your delicates isn’t encouraged since the fabric can stretch out of shape.

Wash your undies as soon as stains appear. Waiting for laundry day just allows the stain to set firmly.

Storing

Store your undies separate from other clothing. If your closet drawers are made of wood, line them with paper or fabric to prevent the wood from pulling on them. Bras should be placed flat in a drawer, as hanging causes them to distend faster. Make sure your closet is dry to discourage mould growth- you don’t want infections now, do you?
