Biscuits are a delicious treat to have any time. They’re light and can go with almost any drink. Just like cookies, you can make biscuits right at home- and customise the recipe to your liking. Here’s a sample recipe to try this weekend.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup shortening
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Method
- Preheat oven to (230 degrees C).
- Sift together flour, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. Cut in shortening with fork or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour milk into flour mixture while stirring with a fork. Mix in milk until dough is soft, moist and stops sticking to the side of the bowl.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and toss with flour. Do this until it’s no longer sticky.
- Roll dough out onto a 1/2 inch thick sheet and cut with a floured biscuit or cookie cutter.
- Press together unused dough and repeat rolling and cutting procedure.
- Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheets and bake in preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Tips
- To achieve flaky biscuits, use cold butter or shortening.
- Avoid twisting the cutter while cutting out the biscuits- this will prevent them from rising thus they will be flat.
