As fascination with relaxers fades away, the natural hair movement continues to grow. You may want to set your little one on a healthy hair journey right from the start. However, not everything that works for your hair is good for them. Here’s how to properly tend to baby’s curly hair.
Cleansing
Use a gentle sulphate- free shampoo to wash baby’s hair. There are shampoos specifically developed for babies, these are even better. Newborns have sensitive and scalp. As such, you’ll only need to wash them just a few times a week. Overwashing leads to dryness which is detrimental to their hair & skin.
Washing should be done gently, with little product and lukewarm water. When baby’s hair grows long enough to detangle, use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove knots and shed hair.
Moisturise & Seal
After washing, use an oil to seal in the hydration. This keeps the hair soft and manageable for longer. Olive oil is ideal as it’s lightweight and has a gentle scent. Gently brush the hair with a baby brush to distribute the oil to all the strands.
Bald Spot
As babies tend to spend a lot of time sleeping on their backs during the first few months, they will have a bald spot at the back of their heads. When they get used to sleeping on their bellies, hair grows back in that spot. It shouldn’t be a cause for alarm. If it bothers you though, invest in a satin baby blanket.
Styling
Newborns are so cute and you may find yourself playing with their hair all the time. However if you want your baby’s hair to be healthy you’ve got to keep styling to a minimum. Hair clips/ bands should be used only once in a while otherwise they can lead to hair loss especially at the hairline.
