Weddings are the place to show off your style. As a guest, you have the freedom to experiment with looks as opposed to the bridal party. So why not go for something different? Ditch the cheesy outfit combinations and express your personality through style.
Shoes
If you’re planning to wear heels, make sure you’re comfortable in them. Buying a new pair on the eve of the wedding isn’t advisable. You need enough time for your feet to get used to them. Consider the time you’ll spend at the event. If it’s an African wedding, remember that there’s lots of dancing! Ensure your shoes are suitable for this. A pair of flats will save you the agony.
Dresses
Again, comfort is key. You don’t want to be pulling down your dress the whole day, or adjusting loose straps. Get a good fit that allows for free movement. The pattern, details and colours should flatter your figure. Generally at weddings, it’s considered impolite for a guest to wear white- it’s considered to be stealing the show from the bride.
Bags
You need a bag that’s small enough to easily carry around, but also large enough to fit essentials such as wipes, lipstick, a mirror, lash glue, safety pins, etc. Invest in a cute clutch if you don’t already have one. A chain cross-body bag is a great choice too.
Accessories
Fascinators are popular wedding headgear. Pop one on and be that guest that wows the crowd. You could also go for head wraps in vibrant African print. If your accessories are bold, keep the rest of the outfit simple and vice versa.
Materials
Your outfit should be made of comfortable material. Not just that which feels good on the skin but goes well with the weather. If the wedding is during the hot season, cotton and other natural fabrics are a better option than synthetics.
General Tips
- If there’s a dress code for the wedding, adhere to it as a sign of respect for the hosts.
- The main point to remember is comfort. Whatever you choose to wear, make sure you’ll be comfortable throughout the day.
- Leave the jeans/ denim for other days.
