Garlic Bread

Everyone loves bread. At least everyone should. But if you’re looking for an alternative to the usual brown or white loaf, why not try garlic bread?

Ingredients

For the loaf:

  • 6 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk 
  • tbsp softened unsalted butter

For the topping:

  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • tbsp butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • tbsp fresh oregano or 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley finely chopped (or 4 tsp dried)

Makes 2 loaves

Method

  1. Pour warm water into a bowl. Add sugar and yeast. Stir and let stand 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add in the butter, milk, salt and 3 cups flour. Stir in additional flour gradually. Keep adding flour until dough is smooth. Knead for 7-10 minutes. Dough should stick to the bottom of the bowl but leave the sides clear. It will be soft and slightly sticky.
  3. Divide dough into 2 equal portions.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the minced garlic, butter, oregano and parsley. Set aside.

  5. Cut dough into 1-inch. pieces; dip into butter mixture. Layer these pieces into 2 – greased 8-inch x 4-inch loaf tins.
  6. Cover loaves and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour. Meanwhile preheat oven to 350 degrees 15 minutes prior to the full rise.
  7. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until golden brown.  Sprinkle with salt and serve.

    Tip

    You can also knead the dough using an automatic mixer for easier mixing.
