A baby’s skin is quite sensitive and thus requires special care. Especially for newborns. And just like adults, they have different skin types each with their own unique needs. If you’re lost on where to start, check out our tips below.
Eczema
If your baby suffers from eczema, they need gentle products such as those that contain sunflower oil distillate. Consult with your doctor before using any product. Make note of anything that triggers flare-ups, for example pollen, pet fur, dry air and heat. Try to minimise exposing your little one to these triggers. Keep bathtime short and use a specially made gentle cleanser for eczema.
Sensitive Skin
If baby’s skin is extremely sensitive, products containing schizandra help in soothing the skin. Go for specialized products designed for sensitive skin and use a moisturizing cream to protect the face from the elements.
Dry Skin
Choose moisturising products to keep the skin supple. Those that contain ceramides are particularly helpful since they help to prevent moisture loss from the skin. In addition, keeping baths short and using a humidifier in baby’s room go a long way in mitigating skin dryness.
General Tips
Newborns don’t need baths every day. 2-3 times a week is enough. Use warm water. Pour water over their shoulders from time to time to prevent them from feeling cold. Wrap baby in a towel when the bath is over. As soon as the water is all absorbed apply moisturiser to lock in the hydration.
Protect their skin from direct sun as much as possible until the age of 6 months. Even then, sunscreen is still needed. Use one with SPF 30. Apply it at least half an hour before stepping out.
Use products made specially for babies. They should be fragrance-free and tear-free to keep negative reactions at bay. If baby reacts badly to any product, discontinue use immediately.
