The festive season is here with us and typical of this time is the copious amounts of food we prepare to celebrate. The aftermath is equally large amounts of leftovers. Instead of throwing them away follow these handy hacks and make the most of those random bits of food.
Reheating Pizza
Pizza tastes great when it’s hot and fresh out of the box. When it’s yesterday’s cold piece, not so much. Remedy this by warming it in a skillet with an aluminum foil lid. The lid captures the heat and concentrates it on the toppings while the skillet uses the residual oil left in the crust to reheat it without making it soggy.
Fries
These are also unpleasant when soggy. Solve this in a flash by warming them in a skillet with a little coconut oil and voila! Crispy fries for your indulgence.
Turkey
Didn’t finish the turkey during that grand Christmas lunch? Reheat it inside a steamer basket to keep the inside nice and juicy.
Fruits
Fruit peels are leftovers that we don’t often think about making use of. They are great for making flavoured water in no time. Perfect for a hot, lazy afternoon.
Avocados are tricky to store once cut. To prevent them from turning brown, sprinkle a little lemon juice and store in a cool, dry place.
If you have so many ripe fruits and are worried about keeping them fresh, freeze some of them for your next smoothie.
Potatoes
Spice up your mashed potatoes with bacon and cheese for a quick snack. Works well for those lazy December days when you don’t feel like making a full meal.
Coffee
Reusing leftover coffee? Yes! Just pour it into an ice cube tray and let it freeze. Use the cubes to cool your coffee next time you’re in a rush.
