Soft

One of the main struggles people face with their natural hair is constant dryness. Some are so frustrated that they go back to relaxers after attempting to start a natural hair journey. However, achieving soft hair is much easier than you think.

If your hair is hard it means it’s not sufficiently hydrated and moisturized. Granted, hair with tight coils won’t feel as smooth as wavy hair, but this is due to difference in texture. All hair types can be soft with proper maintenance.

Natural hair tends to dry out faster than relaxed hair so it needs to be moisturized often. Wash it once a week/ every two weeks depending on your schedule. Use a gentle sulphate- free shampoo that doesn’t strip the hair of its natural oils. Make sure you deep condition after rinsing out the shampoo. Deep conditioning gives an extra moisture boost in addition to infusing your strands with nutrients that keep them supple.

In between washes, your hair still needs to be hydrated. You can use any of these methods:

Baggy Method

This is also known as the greenhouse method (GHM). Begin by spritzing your hair with water then cover with a plastic bag. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Your body heat lifts the hair’s cuticles, allowing the water to be absorbed. After removing the plastic bag, apply an oil to seal the hydration in, for instance olive oil. Follow with your cream or butter of choice. The last 2 steps are interchangeable.

Water Rinse

Hop into the shower, rinse your hair in warm water. Dry using a cotton cloth- squeeze the strands, do not rub. Rubbing causes tension on the hair and brings with it tangles too. Let the hair air dry until it’s damp. Seal in the water using a cream then an oil or vice versa. Style as desired.

If you are short on time, spritz your hair until it is damp, not dripping wet. Apply an oil followed by a butter. For an extra boost add some aloe vera gel to the water. This ingredient is amazing at hydrating hair. If your hair is open, work in sections to make the process easier.

Apart from washing and using products, here are some extra tips to ensure your hair stays soft:

  • Use a satin bonnet or scarf when going to bed. Cotton pillowcases  absorb water away from the hair and cause friction on the hairline.
  • Drink lots of water and your hair will thank you.
  • Keep your hair tucked away during extremely hot/ cold days using headwraps, hats or wigs.
