Over the past 3 years or so there’s been a lot of excitement as African women ditch relaxers and ‘return to natural’ as it’s called. There’s been a lot of hype as well. This has caused confusion for many who want to embark on a healthy hair journey. If this describes you, we’ve sifted out the chaff so you can have the real facts.
- Not all Hair is the Same
Yes! Most people are unaware that there isn’t one big category called ‘African hair’ where all black women’s hair is the same. Our hair occurs in many types/ textures, the most common being the coily/ tightly curled types 3 and 4. As such, different hair types require different care and it’s vital to understand your type. - It’s a Journey
This might sound obvious but many ladies become fascinated with growing their hair long. Sadly they get obsessed with achieving results quickly thus end up with shelves full of ‘miracle products’. Look at it as a journey instead. Take time to learn your hair’s needs, develop a regimen, try out different styles while focusing on the health of your hair. Enjoy each step of the journey and the hair length will come. - Mistakes/ Setbacks
These are a normal part of the journey, especially if you don’t have a sister/ friend who’s already a naturalista. You’re learning so much about your hair that’s contrary to what you’ve believed all your life. Be patient with yourself even though you make mistakes. It’s a part of the learning process and from them you’ll know what not to do next time. - A Test of Your Confidence
We’ve come a long way, but wearing your hair natural is still not as widely embraced as it could be. Especially if your hair has tight coils. You’ll likely encounter people who tell you to ‘tame’ your hair, ask why your hair isn’t ‘done’ or if you’re having a ‘bad hair day’. Wearing natural hair is a test of your confidence and the more you do it, the more confident you become! - It’s a Lifestyle
Sure, you’ll begin with hair care but as most naturalistas agree, you’ll find yourself embracing a healthy lifestyle overall. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself changing your diet, skin products and paying more attention to your fitness as time goes by.
