saffron

Saffron (also known as kesar, kumkumappu, jaffaran or zaeafran) is a spice produced from the flower of a perennial plant. The stigmas are painstakingly handpicked, cut and then carefully laid on a sieve and cured over heat. It can take 75,000 blossoms to produce a single pound of spice. This elaborate process makes saffron the most expensive spice in the world.

It occurs in different varieties including padmagadhi,  parasika kumkuma, acquilla, bahilka, sargol and madhugandhi.

It has a myriad of benefits, making it even more valuable.

Relief From Colds

If you catch a cold and you have saffron in the house, no need for pills. This spice is an effective reliever of flu. Just mix it with milk and apply on your forehead. You should feel better in minutes.

Skin

For radiant skin and lighter complexion, apply saffron milk to your face and let sit for a few minutes before washing off. Alternatively, add the spice to milk & drink it or add the strands to your bath water and your skin will become lighter over time.

Cooking

Instead of artificial colouring/ flavouring agents, use this spice for your next meal. It’s suitable for meat dishes, baking, a booster for coffee, champagne, yoghurt and milk.
