Of the many things you can do online today, from learning a new language, reading the news, playing games at Betway online gambling in Kenya and ordering food, one of the best the internet came up is social media. It is a tool to keep up with your favorite personalities, to get new recipes and beauty tips, to have fun and be amazed by the wonders and horrors humanity can do… in short, an endless stream of emotion and entertainment coming your way through simple apps like Facebook and Instagram. The latter is perhaps the most intimate way of keeping up with your favorite personalities over the internet, reading their updates, seeing them at their best… and sometimes, at their worst.
Instagram is a far-reaching service with more than 1 billion active users (as of the end of last year). Let’s see who are the people with the biggest following online today.
5: Kim Kardashian
The reality show star and media personality Kim Kardashian West has 134 million followers on Instagram today. The mother of three and wife to rapper Kanye West is still a celebrated beauty, and also a successful businesswoman with her own mobile app, clothing and other products.
4. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
With 138 million followers, The Rock (born Dwayne Douglas Johnson) is the fifth most followed media personality on Instagram. After a successful stint with college football, The Rock made a name for himself as a wrestler, following the footsteps of his father, himself a successful wrestler Rocky Johnson. He fought his way to the top, becoming one of the most successful professional wrestlers before trying his luck in acting. His first acting role was that of playing his father in the sitcom “That 70s Show” in the mid-1990s, while his first movie role was that of the Scorpion King in the 2001 action fantasy “The Mummy Returns”. Since then, his way up was uninterrupted: today, he has a filmography of more than 40 acting and voice acting roles, numerous TV appearances, and the fifth highest following on Instagram.
3. Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez started her career as an actress at the Disney Channel – she broke through in series “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2007. She signed her first recording contract in 2008 and continued to alternate between acting and singing for a few years. Her breakout as a singer came in 2012 when she released her first single “Come & Get It” from her debut solo album “Stars Dance” which broke into the top positions of the charts instantly. Since then, she released another studio album, and a new one is on its way. At the same time, she continued working as an actor and a producer. Today, her Instagram following is the fourth highest in the world, at 148 million.
2. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande became a teen idol in the early 2010s thanks to the Nickelodeon live-action series Victorious, where she played the “adorably dimwitted” Cat Valentine. She wanted to focus on singing rather than acting – she kept recording covers of various songs and uploading them to her YouTube channel, that helped her with her career: a year later, she released her first single in December 2011, and her ascension didn’t stop ever since. Today, she has five studio albums under her belt, she became the youngest artist to headline Coachella and has the third highest Instagram following in the world: 151 million.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
Surprising as it may sound, it’s not a singer, an actor or a model in the top spot in our list of people with the highest Instagram following but a football player: Cristiano Ronaldo, with 162 million followers. Currently playing for the Italian club Juventus Turin, he is considered by many perhaps the best football player in the world. Aside from his football career, Ronaldo is also a well-known philanthropist – among others, he donated to and raised money for causes ranging from the victims of the 2004 tsunami that hit Indonesia, funding schools for the children in Gaza, the Save the Children Fund, the victims of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, and The Mangrove Care Forum in Indonesia fighting to save the mangrove forests.
