For natural hair to thrive it needs special care. Especially if it’s the coily type, it needs to be handled like delicate lace. Hot weather conditions can be harsh on our hair, causing it to dry out fast. Here are some tips to manage that.
Protective styling
Having your hair out in a fro, twistout or braidout is fun but not ideal for hot weather. The more hair is left in ‘out’ styles, the more prone it is to drying. Instead opt for protective styles such as braids, twists or cornrows. These keep your strands close together and enable them maintain moisture.
Stay out of the sun
Direct sun is quite harsh especially in tropical countries. Minimize your time in the sun from 10 am- 4 pm when it’s hottest. Apart from dryness the sun can cause your hair to change colour over time. Avoiding direct sun benefits both your hair and skin.
Drink Water!
The greater percentage of keeping hair moisturized begins from the inside. Drink water throughout the day, don’t just wait until you’re thirsty. Coily hair needs help in staying supple and hair products aren’t enough. Staying hydrated plays a big role in keeping natural hair soft.
Hair Products
Depending on your hair type and how it responds to products, you might want to switch to lighter ones during hot weather. Try light oils (such as olive oil) and styling butters to avoid weighing down your strands.
Daily Regimen
For your daily regimen, hydration is key. An oil/ water spritz followed by shea butter or an oil to the ends of the strands seals in moisture. At bedtime, use a satin scarf to retain moisture and prevent friction with bedding. A satin pillowcase is a plus since scarves tend to slip off at night, leaving your hairline exposed to dryness.
