Nairobi Film Festival

It’s that time of the year again! The third edition of the Nairobi Film Festival is set to start this week. If you’re a film buff or looking to appreciate local talent more, your plans for 6th- 16th June are sorted.

Nairobi Film Festival began 3 years ago, presenting exceptional films from around the world that are rarely presented in Nairobi’s mainstream cinema. The festival also shows the best made Kenyan films in a lively festival format.

The creators of this festival are firmly committed to the notion that films are best experienced with an audience – where you experience your own emotions as you watch the films but are also conscious of the reactions of those around you.

They’re also dedicated to the presentation of film in a manner that loyally honours the creative intentions of the filmmaker – sonically and visually by presenting the films using the best screening facilities in the city.

Some of this year’s films include:

Lusala– the story of a young man rescued from his abusive upcountry home, who then moves in with an affluent Nairobi family. When he comes of age he moves out on his own. Initially all was well until the demons from his past return, and he is forced to face them alone.

Cook Off– Anesu- a single mother- has her life turned upside down when her son enters her into a reality TV cooking competition.

Miriam Miente- A daughter of a black father and a white mother in the Dominican Republic, Miriam is a young woman about to celebrate her 15th birthday and present her black boyfriend to the family.

Akasha– a 2018 Sudanese comedic film written and directed by Hajooj Kuka about a Sundanese soldier caught between his love for his girlfriend and his AK-47.

Yuli– the Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, a legend on the dance world and the first black dancer to perform some of the most famous ballet roles.

The events and screenings are a strong debunking of the myth that Kenyan audience are not interested in consuming Kenyan content- they are simply starved of good examples of it.
