Hair is arguably the first thing people notice when they meet someone new. After all, it is one of the only parts of yourself that you have complete freedom and control to change as a source of self-expression. Your hair gives you complete control over what you want to do with it. Is it braids, a new colour, bangs? Do you want to weave it or wig it? Choosing a hairstyle, hair color, haircut, or hair length, are some of the only ways you can express your individual personality freely.

Read on to find out what your hair says about you.

Hair length

Whether it’s a wig or your natural hair, the length of your hair reveals more about your personality than you might think.

Sustaining short and healthy hair requires frequent salon visits for cuts. It is therefore no surprise that short-haired girls tend to be artistic and appreciate self-expression more than others. A good example is Kenyan content creator Joy Kendi. Those on the more creative side may use special products, like some hair colour or relaxer to sculpt and style their hair.

Girls with medium length hair are very logical thinkers and good-natured souls. They are not high-maintenance because their hair care and upkeep don’t require as many haircuts as those with short hair, or as much product as long-haired ladies.

Women that do have longer locks value their freedom and usually have a lighthearted and carefree personality. Dreadlocks have become a popular hairstyle among African women, even here in Kenya. The particularly longer locks have been associated with tremendous freedom among many women.

Hair color

African women are born predominantly with black, kinky hair. However, those who dye blonde or other light colors are considered confident and outgoing. Women who experiment with bolder colors like purple, green or pink are considered bold, experimental and artistic.

Hair type

Girls with straight hair are generally pulled-together when they need to be, but are also quick to let loose and have fun.

Curly-haired girls are fierce in all that they do. They are passionate, generous, and nurturing and quick to take the initiative.

While other races can have straight, wavy, or curly strands, most black people have varying degrees of tightly curled strands. It may come in spirals, coils, loops, zig zags, or other curves. This is why it tends to grow up rather than down and can make gravity defying shapes like afros and puffs.

By this standard, personality for black women can be compared to their hair only by how they choose to style it. Every woman is allowed to experiment and express themselves however they find fit.

Now that you know what kind of message your hair is sending, why not try changing up the signal a little bit? You’ll be surprised by how the world will react to your hair personality change.
