You’ve heard it said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But so does a glass of wine! There have been numerous arguments for and against wine positively affecting human health. Wine lovers can rejoice as there is now research supporting its consumption for better health- as long as it’s taken in moderation, of course.
Heart Health
A group of Swedish researchers from the Karolinska Institute reported that light drinkers had a reduced risk of premature dying by up to 1/3 as compared to non-drinkers. This is because of improved cardiovascular health and lower risks of heart attacks.
This drink dilates arteries, leading to a boost in blood flow. This in turn lowers the risk of embolism (clots). In addition, it also reduces the presence of Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol which is responsible for hardening arteries.
Strong Bones
According to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in April 2000, women who drank 1-3 glasses of wine daily had higher bone density at the thigh bones as compared to non-drinkers. This wards off the loss of calcium in bones (osteoporosis).
Cancer Protection
Wine contains compounds called phenols which suppress the growth of prostrate cancer and liver cancer cells. They also slow the development of breast cancer cells. That’s not all. The antioxidants resveratrol and quercetin present in red wine may inhibit the growth of oral cancer cells, according to a study done by researchers from the University of Missouri School of Dentistry.
Improved Skin
Who would think that wine contributes to better skin? Reservatol inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria. So instead of forking out loads of cash on many creams, just pop that cork, pour a glass and toast to great skin.
Replacement For Gym?
This antioxidant seems to be a miracle agent. Research shows that it improves bone, heart and brain function in the same way as gym sessions do. Let’s drink to that!
