This month, the Zeda Book Club is reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a gothic masterpiece that continues to shape literature, philosophy, and popular culture more than 200 years after its publication.

Written when Shelley was just 18, Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates life only to be horrified by his own creation. What unfolds is a haunting exploration of ambition, morality, and what it truly means to be human. Beneath its eerie atmosphere and tragic narrative lies a deeply emotional and philosophical text that asks timeless questions about creation, responsibility, and the consequences of playing god.

As we’ve been diving into classics, Frankenstein feels like a natural continuation as it’s a book that bridges horror, science fiction, and social commentary. It’s astonishing how modern it still feels, touching on issues of alienation, identity, and the ethics of progress that remain just as relevant today.

At Zeda Book Club, we’re excited to revisit this enduring story not just as a tale of monsters and men, but as a profound reflection on humanity’s yearning for knowledge, connection, and belonging. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein reminds us that even the darkest stories can illuminate the deepest truths about ourselves. We will also be watching the film together after our meetup, for more continued fun! The latest adaptation is out on Netflix that same week and we do love Director Guillermo del Toro’s work! We’re super excited for this one!

Zeda Book Club is open to women to join. We café hop and read a new book every month. We meet on the first Sunday of each month in Nairobi. Join the group here. Happy reading!
