Kenya is preparing for the state funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on 15 October 2025 in Kerala, India, while receiving medical treatment. He was 80 years old.
The late Odinga’s body arrived in Nairobi today morning Thursday, 16 October, and was received by government officials, family members, and supporters. The Government of Kenya declared a seven day period of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast across all public institutions.
Memorial Service in Nairobi
A national memorial service will be held in Nairobi on Friday, 17 October 2025, at Nyayo Stadium beginning at 10:00 a.m. The service will bring together leaders from across the political spectrum, members of the clergy, and representatives from the diplomatic community.
President William Ruto is expected to lead the nation in paying tribute, alongside former and current government officials, opposition leaders, and dignitaries.
State Funeral in Kisumu
Following the Nairobi service, Odinga’s body will be flown to Kisumu for a public viewing on Saturday 18 October at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, and then onwards to Bondo for the funeral set for Sunday 19 October 2025. After the official state function, a private burial will be held at his ancestral home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County, where he will be laid to rest beside his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Public Tributes and Viewing
Public viewings are being held in Nairobi and Kisumu ahead of the funeral, allowing Kenyans to pay their final respects. Condolence books remain open at county headquarters and major public offices across the country. Security agencies have announced traffic and crowd management measures in both Nairobi and Kisumu to facilitate the national events. The funeral events will be broadcast live on national television and streamed on official platforms.
Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013 and played a key role in the country’s democratic transition and constitutional reform. His passing marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s political history and the conclusion of an era defined by his influence on national discourse.
