When They See Us

If you haven’t watched this mini- series yet, what rock have you been under? When They See Us received rave reviews and soaring ratings within days of its release, and for good reason. It tackles the issues of racism and injustice in America. The fact that it’s based on a true story makes the series even more heart- wrenching.

Five teens in Harlem are living a relatively normal life until one day when they’re falsely accused of assaulting and raping a woman (Trisha Meili) in Central Park. She was found beaten and raped and was in a coma for 12 days. The five are subjected to unfair trials, convicted of various charges and sent to prison. The series follows the events in the lives of the boys and their families in the face of subversion of justice.

In 2002 the actual assailant (Matias Reyes) was identified through DNA, Reyes’ confession and other evidence brought before the District Attorney’s office. By this time the 5 accused had already served their full sentences. They sued the city in 2003 for wrongful conviction and were awarded a settlement in 2014. In addition, they filed a suit against the state and a settlement was paid out in 2016.

Apart from Trisha, 8 other people were attacked in the Park. Detectives dubbed it ‘the Central Park jogger case’.

As most of those who have watched When They See Us have confessed, you’ll need a box of tissues nearby. Some of their reactions have been anger, frustration, grief and hurt. If you’re ready for an emotional roller coaster, head over to Netflix now.
