eating

If you’re on a quest to stay healthy, the first thing you could be thinking about is exercise. Well, healthy living is 80% eating and 20% exercise. So clean up your kitchen and get with these substitutes.

Avocado Spread

If you’re looking to ditch margarine, avocados make a great substitute. It’s not only tasty, but also healthy. Avocados are rich in healthy fats, fibre & 20 vitamins and minerals. Mash half an avocado on top of your toast, drizzle with some lemon juice, and top it off with a slice of tomato for a filling sandwich.

Coconut Oil

Substitute vegetable oil for this healthier, versatile oil. It contains healthy fats and isn’t quick to smoke.

Hummus

Did you know that a tablespoon of mayonnaise contains 95 calories and 10 grams of fat? Hummus, on the other hand, has 25 calories, 1.4 grams of fat, and 1.2 grams of protein for the same quantity. And it has a richer flavour.

Fruits

Fruit juice is a favourite for those who don’t drink soda, but they contain more calories than actual fruits. Replace juice with whole fruit. If you’re to drink juice take small quantities at a time.

Goat Cheese

Low-fat cheese sounds like the healthier option, right? However, eating whole cheese can ward off obesity. Since it’s more filling than the low-fat you’re likely to eat less. It’s packed with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a type of fat that reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Trail Mix

Sweets and chocolates might sound like the hardest thing to give up. But think about the amount of processed sugar they contain. If you can’t cut them out completely then reduce your intake. Prepare a home made trail mix using popcorn, raw nuts, unsweetened dried fruit and dark chocolate chips. This is a healthy snack loaded with  healthy fats, whole grains, protein and fibre.

Dark Chocolate

What if you don’t have to leave chocolate at all? Opt for dark chocolate which is low in processed sugar. It has high levels of flavanols that regulate blood sugar levels. Might take a while to get used to less sugar, but your body will thank you for it.
