hydrating oily skin

The hot season is upon us here in Kenya. Time to bring out those outfits you’ve been saving, and maybe even go on vacation. However if you have oily skin, you might dread this season due to increased oiliness. The excess sweating and your makeup moving around after applying it don’t sound like fun! But worry not, we have some helpful tips for you!

Avoid Washing Your Face Too Often

It can be tempting to clean oily skin as soon as it feels greasy, but twice per day is enough. Anything more than that makes your skin dry then stimulates it to produce even more oil. Cleansing only once in the morning and once before bed. Use a gentle cleanser that won’t irritate your skin.

Sunscreen!

Did you know that apart from sun protection, mineral sunscreens are excellent at absorbing skin oil? Mineral sunscreens contain Zinc and Titanium Dioxide.

Use Lighter Moisturizers and Night Creams

Lay off the heavy moisturizers during summer. Instead, use lighter moisturizers.

Blotting Paper

Use oil blotters to remove oil from your face physically. They don’t remove too much oil such that the skin dries out. They remove just enough for shine control.

Use Anti-acne Products

During summer, use products that are formulated to fight acne. Do it even if your skin isn’t acne-prone. Avoid products that contain Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide- these can be harsh to the skin. Natural products such as tea tree oil are perfect for eliminating blemishes.

Less Makeup

Makeup is awesome, but too much of it clogs pores, causing them to produce more sebum, thus leading to breakouts. Since you’re likely to be at the pool or beach most of the summertime, let your skin go makeup-less. If you’re not a fan of this, you can opt for a light BB cream or tinted moisturizer.
