Home Remedies

Being down with a cold or flu can be devastating. The headaches, sore throat, runny nose, etc that come with it aren’t fun to deal with. Here are some ways to get relief using home remedies that utilize natural ingredients.

Chicken Soup

For best results use fresh veggies to prepare this soup. Scientific studies show that it slows the movement of neutrophils in the body. These are a type of white blood cells. When they move slowly they concentrate in the parts of the body that need them the most thus speeding up recovery.

Honey

The antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of nature’s wonderfood make it an effective treatment for flu. Consuming it in tea infused with lemon soothes sore throats.

Gargling

To relieve a sore throat, gargle half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in 235 ml of water 4 times a day. You can also use  honey or honey and apple cider vinegar for this.

Vitamin C

This immunity booster is widely available in limes, oranges, lemons, grapefruit and green leafy veggies. Drinking lemon tea/ lemonade helps to reduce phlegm when you have a cold.

Ginger

Let a few slices of ginger root sit in boiling water for some minutes. Allow to cool to a temperature that you can drink then strain the liquid into a mug and sip away.

Garlic

Adding garlic to your diet aids in alleviating cold symptoms. This is due to the compound allicin that has antimicrobial properties.

Salt Water

Rinsing your nose with salt water removes viruses and bacteria while unclogging congestion.

Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 235 ml of warm water. Using a bulb syringe or nasal irrigation kit, squirt water into the nose. Hold one nostril closed by applying light finger pressure while squirting the salt mixture into the other nostril. Let it drain. Repeat a few times, then do the same to the other nostril.
